History
Hyderabad was founded in 1591 and planned as a grid with the Charminar at its centre. The city sight seeing includes the grand palaces of its erstwhile rulers, the Nizams, and the colourful bazaars and mosques of the old city.
Climate
Maximum temperature is 38 degrees Celsius, minimum temperature 12 degrees Celsius, annual rainfall less than 200 mm. Temperatures do come down in winter with September to December being the best times to visit. June to November are monsoon months. The best time to visit then is during or just after the monsoons.
The Charminar
Charminar, the hub of the city, is square in shape, each side measuring 100 feet, with a central pointed high arch at the center. The projected canopy, ornamental brackets and decoration in stucco plaster add graceful elegance to the structure. On the upper courtyard, a screen of arches topped by a row of square jall or water screens lends a fragile charm to the sturdy appearance of Charminar. This courtyard was used as a school and for prayers at the mosque.
The Golkonda Fort
A short distance away from the city is situated one of the most magnificent fortresses in India, the Golconda Fort. The fort dates back to the time of the Qutub Shahi kings, though its origin has been traced to earlier periods, to the reign of the Yadavas and later the Kakatiyas. The fortress is built on a granite hill 120 metres high. Its gates are studded with menacing iron spikes, intended to discourage elephants from battering them down.
The Mecca Masjid
One of the largest mosques in the world, the Mecca Masjid is said to accommodate upto 10,000 worshippers. The foundation of the mosque was laid during the reign of Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah in 1614, but was completed only in 1687, when the Golconda Kingdom was annexed by Emperor Aurangzeb.
Salar Jung Museum
Salar Jung Museum the single largest one man collections of the world. If this one man had not chosen to remain a bachelor the world would have been bereft of one of the greatest collection of antiques. These art objects were collected by Yusuf Ali Salar Jung, the Prime minister to the Nizam. Though Salar Jung III is credited with this fantastic collections, it all started with his father and grandfather.
The Nizam`s Museum
Dedicated to the last and seventh Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, it has a rich collection of souvenirs, mementos, and models presented on the silver jubilee of Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khans reign.
State Archaeological Museum
A general collection of sculpture, painting, arms and artifacts from different period, some dating back to the 2nd century BC. Major collections, however are from the Asaf Jahi period.
Open: 10.30 to 5pm. Closed Mondays and public holidays.
Health Museum
Exhibits include models, charts, specimens and photographs meant primarily for children. Films are shown on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Open timing:10 to 5pm. Closed Friday and public holidays
Hussain Sagar Lake
Hussain Sagar is a large lake in the midst of the city and was constructed in 1562 A.D. The Tank Bund links the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The broad road on the bund is lined with lawns and 33 statues of famous personalities of the State stand along the bund of the lake.
Lumbini park
Lumbini park is located in the Buddha Purnima project has a musical fountain. The 16 meter tall, 350 tone monolithic colossus rises high from the placid waters of the picturesque Hussain Sagar lake. The statue of Lord Buddha is placed on the rock of Gibraltar in the middle of the Lake.
It is open to public from Tuesday to Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Himayat Sagar
A lake parallel to the Osman Sagar lake is a slightly smaller lake called the Himayat Sagar. It is named after the youngest son of the seventh Nizam, Himayat Ali Khan. It is an ideal picnic spot and the road atop the bund can make a good road for a drive. Take a long drive to Himayat Sagar on a holiday. This lovely combination of clean air, sparkling water and a lush area makes the perfect picnic spot.
Shamirpet
In the northerly direction from the city of Secunderabad is the Shamirpet lake. It is a combination of a water reserve and a deer park where several species of deer can be seen in their natural habitat. An ideal spot for a picnic.
Indira Park
In the heart of the city this large park is named after Indira Gandhi. It is situated on the lower Tank Bund road beside the Hussain Sagar. Boat rides are offered at the small lake located in the center of the park.
Public Gardens
The Public Gardens are the largest gardens in the city. Within its premises are a number of important public buildings including the State Legislative Assembly. A stones throw away from the Hyderabad railway station, is one of the best laid out gardens in the country. With buildings of the State Legislature, State Archaeological Museum, Jubilee Hall, Jawahar Bal Bhavan and Telugu Lalitha Kala Thoranam-an open air theatre.
Nehru Zoological Park
Sprawling across 300 lush green acres, the Nehru Zoological park is one of the biggest zoos in Asia with over 250 species. 2450 animals and birds are kept in natural environment. The lion safari park, the first in Asia, natural history museum, pre-historical animals park, nocturnal birds, a children park with a train ride are other impressive sights. Its special sections and amusement facilities are a popular draw.
Deer Park
Located in Vanasthalipuram, about 15 kilometers from the center of the town, the Deer park is a tourists attraction. The deer park has 189 hectares dominated by acacia trees. The park looks picturesque in the monsoon with the golden and white flowers of these trees on the lush green carpet of grass. There is no entry fee. Except on Mondays the park is open every day of the week for visitors from 9.a.m. to 5 p.m
Madanna Temple
It was built in 1375 AD and situated on a hill in Golconda, it is considered to be the most ancient temple of the Hyderabad city.
Birla Mandir
It is a beautiful Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara built out of white marble.
Jain Temples
The Kunthunath and Padmavati Temples are important Jain temples in Hyderabad.
Deccan Festival
The deccan festival highlights Hyderabads arts, crafts, culture and cusine. This festival also includes a Pearls and Bangles fair and a food fair. Cultural programs, food stalls arts and craft shops etc. are also organized.
